The challenge of embedded systems: the synergy between Teoresi and STMicroelectronics creates the best embedded solutions for micro-mobility
CorporatePartnershipThe Embedded World fair in Nuremberg represented a unique opportunity for companies in the field of embedded systems and IoT to present the most innovative solutions, and for Teoresi to showcase some of our technological partnerships. This year, our participation in the fair was even more significant thanks to our collaboration with STMicroelectronics for the development of software solutions integrated with ST hardware. This allows us to offer our customers advanced and customized solutions that maximize the performance and security of their systems.
During the fair, we presented some of our solutions integrated with ST’s hardware, including the autonomous PITEF trolley and customizable HMI systems for Android Auto applicable to various advanced micro-mobility contexts.
We asked Fabio Gadda, Strategic Marketing and Business Intelligence Expert at Teoresi, for some insights on these solutions.
What are embedded systems and what has led to Teoresi’s recognition as an excellence in this field?
Embedded systems are computer systems that perform specific functions within more complex devices or systems. They have a wide range of applications, including automobiles, airplanes, household appliances, medical devices, toys, and much more.
Teoresi is capable of creating end-to-end solutions for complex projects: we specialize in the development of devices, from concept and design, to embedded software development, to testing and validation in the final stage of the prototyping process. The development of embedded systems is a crucial phase because it allows for the creation of advanced and autonomous devices, but it requires specific technical expertise and great attention to detail to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the systems themselves.
The autonomous cart is a perfect example of an embedded system designed for indoor micro-mobility, let us understand it better. Moreover, can we consider it an “ST-embedded” solution?
Teoresi has created a prototype of an autonomous cart capable of moving both indoors and outdoors, a use case that has piqued the interest of many of our clients. It can move autonomously within a well-defined and monitored perimeter and can transport small and medium-sized items up to a maximum weight of 120 kg.
ST products are present in almost all components of the system: we have the SPC5 microcontroller, which is the heart of the system, and many types of sensors, including the VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser), the IMU (Inertial measurement units), the ToF (Time-Of-Flight sensor that measures distances based on the speed of light), and finally a motor control system based on STSPIN.
To develop a safe system, we have created a platform based on hardware that ensures a high degree of security and allows us to quickly achieve the required level of reliability. We work very closely with clients for whom this aspect is essential in order to innovate their products and offer ever more cutting-edge solutions.
At the fair, we also brought a second prototype of an HMI device for Android Auto, applicable in various micro-mobility contexts. What is it?
In this case, we are talking about a real dashboard for Android Auto, highly customizable and replicable in various advanced micro-mobility contexts. In the very near future, in the smart city, mopeds, electric bikes, and scooters will communicate with each other, with infrastructure, and with pedestrians in order to safely navigate roads, park, search for destinations, through feedback and alerts provided and received through mini-displays or Extended Reality. We used an ST microcontroller and the multi-core Accordo5 processor for audio-video projection via smartphone and capable of communicating with the control systems of other connected objects or vehicles (such as the handlebars of an e-bike).
The introduction of new technologies, along with new mobility models such as vehicle sharing, electrification, and autonomous driving, is revolutionizing the way we move. Mobility is rapidly evolving with a profound impact on our user experience. It is essential to find technological solutions capable of supporting this transformation and improving the overall experience.
