Abstract

This thesis work presents the development of a surgical training program for suturing using Unity software to create a virtual environment. The study also includes a feasibility analysis for a future haptic component. The main objective of this project was to create a realistic user experience by designing a virtual room equipped with all the necessary tools and a leg as the object of the procedure. To enhance the effectiveness of the training, the different stages of the intervention, such as cutting and suturing, were simulated. These stages were guided by numbered hatchings and voice commands to facilitate the learning process. The application offers users the opportunity to improve their suturing skills through precise and steady movements. This innovative and advantageous training program does not require any specific work environment or suture kits.

Objectives

  • Design of a virtual reality environment for surgical suture training. -Feasibility study of the integration of the haptic component.
  • Feasibility study of the integration of the haptic component.

Research Methodology

Bibliographic research

Conclusions

  • Realisation of a surgical suture training through virtual reality, that can be used by the user for the purpose of:
  • Training activities
  • Improving the precision and accuracy of movements -Realisation of a working environment similar to the reality, in order to bring the user as close as possible to a realistic context

Future developments

The possibility of combining virtual reality with haptic devices and artificial intelligence. It would enable more complex and safer surgical procedures and, moreover, it would also ensure a better prepation of medical personnel for surgery, by reducing intra- and post-operative complications.
