Abstract
The purpose of the thesis is the design and development of a communication network for smart devices, based on Cloud technologies and IoT protocols, which can expose useful services in the V2X domain. In the following thesis project, the Cloud component, based on AWS services (Amazon Web Service), is used for the development of the communication network and data processing. Moreover, an embedded system based on Android Automotive has been implemented, it is able to exploit the communication network by establishing a V2C communication. This device, intended as a simulation of a vehicular infotainment system, will help to obtain several benefits such as reduced the fuel consumption and environmental pollution.
Objectives
The V2X project included the development of a prototype infotainment system, based on Raspberry Pi4 embedded hardware and Android Automotive operating system, connected to a camera for video streaming and to the EOBD socket for CAN communication. All collected data is ‚packaged‘ according to the ETSI standard and transmitted via the 5G network to AWS for processing.
Research methodology
The concepts of cloud computing, and in particular the services offered by Amazon AWS and its SDK, were studied. Furthermore, in the initial phase, the study of Android Automotive was deepened. We then moved on to the creation of a network architecture based on cloud services and serverless applications that can be used by an embedded device based on Android Auto. The architecture therefore involved the integration of various communication services \ protocols such as MQTT. Finally, the ETSI standard was deepened and implemented to make the system compatible with 5G networks.
Conclusions
Android Automotive has been installed on the Raspberry Pi 4 and a vehicular infotainment that meets the system requirements has been implemented. With the application of IoT protocols and the correct use of AWS Cloud services, it was possible to set up a communication network that could provide functionality on demand in a V2X context.
Future developments
Among the foreseen future developments there is the cooperation between traffic lights for providing speed advice in a given area and the extension of the multi-signal detection service.
